The Ivy Asia
In the height of summer , the perfect time painting en plein air. This painting was entered in to the annual “London Plein Air” Painting competition in association Chelsea Art Society. The location we were given for was Chelsea, our mission was to choose a location and paint a scene from the area.
My approach:
I researched the area for months before hand, I visited the local cafes bars and restaurants, I sat in parks and sketched, I wanted to get concrete understanding of character of the area. From the iconic to the everyday. I choose to mix the two together which is how I choose this composition.
The Ivy Asia is a world renowned restaurant and well known spot for Chelsea. The red and green contrasting colours was also interesting to me its like a battle of colour on the page, The way I painted also embodies the colour blending a merging into each other. In the bottom corner of the painting you can see the lime bikes which is something most people see everyday. The use of green guides your eye around the image allowing you to explore the personality of the landscape and get to know the iconic area of Chelsea.
This painting was a fun and interesting process, I gained a further understanding of how to use composition to create an art that resonate with people.
